Grandma's Apple Pie

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup ice water
  • 6 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. Make the crust: Mix flour and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add ice water a tablespoon at a time until dough comes together. Divide in half, wrap, and chill. ( 30 min )
  3. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  4. Mix sliced apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. Roll out half the dough and line a 9-inch pie dish.
  6. Add apple filling and dot with butter. Roll out remaining dough for top crust.
  7. Seal edges and cut vents in top. Brush with egg wash if desired.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake until golden. ( 45 min )
  9. Let cool before serving. ( 30 min )

This recipe has been in our family for generations. The trick is to use a mix of tart and sweet apples.
