Grandma's Apple Pie
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup cold butter, cubed
- 1/2 cup ice water
- 6 apples, peeled and sliced
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Make the crust: Mix flour and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add ice water a tablespoon at a time until dough comes together. Divide in half, wrap, and chill. ( 30 min )
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
- Mix sliced apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Roll out half the dough and line a 9-inch pie dish.
- Add apple filling and dot with butter. Roll out remaining dough for top crust.
- Seal edges and cut vents in top. Brush with egg wash if desired.
- Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake until golden. ( 45 min )
- Let cool before serving. ( 30 min )
This recipe has been in our family for generations. The trick is to use a mix of tart and sweet apples.
